Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the claims on the Waldo Patent, and the appointment of referees to handle any disputes. Writes that "I presume you inferred that I could not wish to push the matter to a decision under improper circumstance, but as these claims ought to be inquired into & decided upon, and that as speedily as possible, I am glad to hear that you have no objection to the business and you may rest assured that all reasonable time will be allowed to investigate it."

Wetmore was married to Lucy Knox's cousin, Sarah Waldo.
