Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Requests money to pay the firm of Samuel Ward & Brothers. Notes that the sum can be charged to his account. Includes a note from the firm to pay Mrs. Catharine Greene, the widow of General Nathanael Greene. Page two contains a 15 September 1787 note signed by Phineas Miller, noting that the sum was received for Mrs. Greene.

Phineas Miller helped Catharine Greene manage the estate of Nathanael Greene after Greene's death in 1786. Miller and Catharine Greene married in 1796.
