Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tillier introduces Knox to Mr. Tardiveau, possibly Barthelemi Tardiveau, the author of a memorial Tillier had previously given to Knox. Identified as a copy in the docket.

Tillier was a business agent and the author of the Memoire Pour Rodolphe Tillier, Commissaire-gerant de la Compagnie de New-York, 1800. Tardiveau was a Congressional agent in the west, trader, and author of Mémoire Concernant le Commerce avec Différentes Nations Sauvages.
