Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports that Mr. Skinner is driving cattle and oxen to New York for Knox. Writes, "Yesterday your Cow & Calf began their March by Land for New York in Company with Seven of the Finest fat oxen in the World two of which are far beyond any I ever saw tho not of the great Breed they are large but their flesh is so thick on them that they can hardly walk..."

Wadsworth was a Commissary during the Revolutionary War, a Continental Congressman, and a friend of Henry Knox. He engaged in agricultural pursuits, introducing several breeds of cattle to the United States.
