Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Bancker solicits a position in the War Office, saying that William Livingston assured him of Knox's promise to let Bancker fill the next vacancy. Writes, "the Late War has Reduced me to the necessity of this application... for it will be a pleasing acquisition, not only admit of comfort to my self but a wife and six children..." Notes that he was referred by Colonel William Livingston. See GLC02437.03949 for Knox's reply.
