Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes, "Mr. De'Saussure presents his respectful compliments to Genl. Knox and Sincerely wishes him a pleasant and prosperous tour to his dominions." Adds that he so appreciates Knox's attentions and help that he is unsure how to thank him, but offers himself to Knox's service. Possibly written by Daniel de Saussure.
