At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. Written from Demerara (he spells it "Demarara"), likely in present-day Guyana. Writes, "A Confidence in your goodness has embolden'd me to request of you to forward the inclosed to Mr [possibly Stephen] Bruce. I should not presume to trouble you did I know of any safe conveyance other ways - I must beg you to excuse the freedom."
