Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that the "Committee appointed to inquire fully into the proceedings of the War Department intend meeting at the War office tomorrow morning at 9 oclock, if convenient for you to attend." Signed by Howard, Chairman of the Committee. Docketed by Knox, "a Committee to enquire fully into the state of the War department."
