Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Unsigned, but handwriting suggests the author is Henry Knox. Informs Eveleigh that he is appointed Comptroller of the Treasury of the United States, and informs him of the salary. Adds that Captain Joseph [Hardy] has been employed in the Treasury Department for eight years and will make an excellent assistant for Eveleigh.
