Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses the purchase of "Holland surveys of the coast of North America, in Sheets." Writes that "as there was not a whole sett [sic], and I suppose you would be glad to own one that is compleat [sic], I take the liberty to inform you, that I am now in possesion [sic] of a Sett that contains the whole Coast of north America; properly pasted together, coloured & bound in 4 long folio Volumes, which should be glad to dispose of..."
