Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses maps of the North American coastline that Knox had expressed an interest in purchasing. Describes them as "done in the most elegant manner for the use of the royal navy of Great Britain - And as I am satisfied they will not only answer but exceed your expectations..." Provides instructions as to what Knox should do with the maps if he does not find them suitable.
