Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox acknowledges Lewis's letter of 22 August 1790 regarding "the suit between my friend Major [Samuel] Shaw and Mr. [Holken]." Discusses the evidence that a court commission might need. Says Captain [Thomas] Randall will be able to provide Lewis with the extent of Mr. Craigie's evidence.
