At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Constable tells Knox he transmitted Knox's letter from 23 July "to the party for whom I was in treaty respecting the Lands bordering on the St. Lawrence." Constable has received orders to purchase the land "agreeable" to Knox's terms, and asks Knox to answer him as soon as possible.
