Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that he has taken the liberty to borrow five thousand dollars for sixty days. Discusses the terms of this loan in conjunction with his desire to send a ship to Canton, China, and has made arrangements with a Mr. Matthew McConnell. Adds that he expects the arrival of Mr. [Samuel] Shaw, his business partner, any day. Finally, touches on the debate in the New York legislature about granting the charter for a bank. "Free" stamped on address leaf with no signature.
