Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writing in the third person, Osmont respectfully asks about the best time to visit Knox to get his signature on a deed given to Knox by Mr. [Benjamin] Walker. Visited Knox twice before, but Knox was always engaged. Impresses upon Knox the importance of completing the business in a timely manner.
