Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked "private." Received his recent letter, and apologizes that his business difficulties have prevented him from answering his questions. Comments on several issues Brooks brought up in his letter regarding new appointments of military officers, and the benefits associated with the positions (see GLC02437.05427 for Brooks's letter to Knox).
