Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Document includes an extract of a letter from Mr. [William] Duer written in French on 24 April. Also includes a receipt from Henry Knox of fifty dollars, dated 19 May. Lastly, letter includes a section in French apparently signed by a Mr. Bancel. Signed also by R.J. Vanden Brock as witness.
