Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Partially printed with names written in by hand. Certifies that Carl Wilhelm de Schmidsfelden is employed in a certain regiment with a yearly wage of 1500 Spanish dollars which should be delivered to him should he leave the regiment, but is now to receive land as payment instead. Contains a seal.
