Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs Knox that Madame de Leval has finally arrived and that the Committee will probably consent to their proposal, providing that "we allow them the years Interest which they will otherways [sic] loose by puting the whole of the payments one year forward - the interest will amount to near fifteen thousand dollars - " Continues to discuss similar business concerning William Duer. Congratulates Knox on the birth of his daughter, stating "the little stranger is the finest & most healthy Child, of any you have had - "
