Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks his brother if there is any business to be done before he leaves New York. Says that he will remain in the area until the following Wednesday or Thursday, and, "During that period it shall be my object to ascertain... every thing respecting the character, integrity, punctuality and general circumstances of Mr. G[reen]." William cautions his brother to proceed with caution in his financial dealings with Green, advising him to do business with Green "as if he was a perfect stranger."
