At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Provides a breakdown of the War Department's salaries for the third quarter of 1793. Includes the salaries for Henry Knox, John Stagg, Philip Audebert, Nathan Jones, James Laugier, Jacob Hoffman, William Burton, and Frederick Sprig. The total amount of the salaries is $1546.47. Knox received $750 for three months as Secretary of War. He made a total of $3,000 for the year. Page two is dated 2 October and has the signatures of all the War Department employees, except Knox, stating they received their pay.
