Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks James Henry Langier, a clerk in the War Department, to give his pay to Burgess Allison. He is asking for pay for his services as clerk in the War Department from 1-5 July. The total is $7. It is signed at the bottom by Allison stating he "Received the above."

Colonel Henley was an agent for the War Department in charge of Indian Affairs based in Knoxville, 1793-1801.
