Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Makes reference to bonds coming due and expresses his need for the money. Fears his "affairs will prove Bankrupt in the Spring - and the sacrifices I shall be compelled to make in the Spring to answer demands against me, I fear will be attended with a dimunition [sic] of twenty thousand dollars in the estimated value of my present property." "Free" stamped on address leaf with no signature.
