Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Saw a letter from Alexander Hamilton to George Washington and the Directors of the Branch Banks "that Genl Schuyler has a credit for 3500 Dollars for the purchase of goods for the use of the Six Nations." Has written to Schuyler, who is unaware of this situation, "but promises to give me the business if it comes under his direction." Offers his services to Knox. Heard rumors of one or two frigates being built in New York. Recommends Captain Anthony Rutgers for the superintendency of the work. Wants to be thought of for the job of payment of accounts or purchaser of materials. Has recently made a partnership with Frederick Babcock. "Free" stamped on address leaf with no signature.
