Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mentions he has been dining, drinking freely, and enjoying the evening. Informs Knox he enclosed a letter from Captain Thomas Vose and Captain Gamaliel Bradford Jr. Describes Bradford's character and his past military experience. Recommends Bradford for an appointment and pledges himself on Bradford's behalf. "Free" stamped on address leaf with no signature.
