Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Has a postal stamped [New?] Haven dated June 20th. Informs Knox he sent Julia [Knox?] a horse. Describes the horse as not being handsome but says it is a Narragansett Breed, which is the best of breeds. Recommends Knox has the horse saddled immediately upon its arrival. Writes, "Gentle usage will make her a perfect Ladys Horse - but if he is whipped or harshly dealt with she will be good for nothing." "Free" stamped on address leaf with no signature.
