Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A memorandum to Knox which lists equipment and workforce needed to conduct surveys in every seaport town in Massachusetts. Notes he will need chains, compasses, and additional men to assist each of the assistant engineers, along with more superintendents. City and state is not listed but appears to be in Boston, Massachusetts.
