Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

My dearest friend. I have [struck: up] been up the river and of course performed my greatest distance and hitherto, with satisfaction to the inhabitants I shall go to Penobscot Town this morning and return by the way of Long Island, and [illegible]. I hope to arrive in Boston by the 10th or 12 Sept - My love to Lucy Julia and the young ones God bless you all
