Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Congratulates Knox on his resignation from the position of Secretary at War and informs him about the progress on the house Knox is building [Montpelier]. Informs him of an unnamed man "the owner of a certain piece of land on the [Mill?] River" was about to sail for Boston but had some bad luck. He injured his hands "by blowing of lime rock" and his daughter died. Discusses some issue involving this man.
