Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Copy of two letters written to Knox from Meade, written in Knox's hand. First letter dated 30 July 1795 Philadelphia. Discusses his current inability to take up drafts and make payments and would therefore relinquish a purchase, presumably of land. Second letter dated 31 August 1795 Philadelphia. Also discusses financial difficulties.
