Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Has enclosed a letter from his son (may be GLC02437.06818, which is signed, "Joseph Peirce & Son"). Asks Knox to send his reply as safely and quickly as possible. Also discusses his attempts to order a "hay screw" to be made for Knox, per his wishes; after it is built, it will be delivered to Brigadiers Island.
