Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that he did not reply until now to Knox's letter from August because he was traveling. The letter from Knox discussed a successful business transaction with Mr. Alexander Baring and the businessmen Willing & Francis. Invites Knox to Boston during the upcoming winter to conclude negotiations. Also complains that Mr. [William] Bingham is still unwilling to help him financially.
