Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes a loving letter to her sons, who are in the United States while she is abroad. Mentions making living arrangements and forming a circle of acquaintance in Calcutta. Discusses her love for her sons and tells them to listen to their kind uncle [Henry Knox] who is caring for them. Describes India and her experiences there.
