Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Asks for Knox's help in re-obtaining his position as a lieutenant in the corps of "Artillerists and Engineers." Apparently he had received his appointment while he was abroad and hurried back to America as soon as he could, only to find that the position had been filled, even though he had never declined the offer.
