At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Knox writes his wife that he wishes to be reunited with her before she receives his letter. He writes that he has arrived from Providence and that their "son sailed from Newport in Capt. Libbey at one oClock, and as the wind was fair until this morning he just have gotten as far as the vineyard." Talks about how he will be doing business for a few more days in Boston.

Boston Sunday Evening 8 oClock. 27 July 1800
Although I ardently hope to embrace the best beloved of my soul before she receives this, yet I cannot suffer the [hope] to depart without writing less something might detain me beyond Saturday next. I have this moment arrived from Providence having left Newport yesterday ay 2 oClock PM. Our son sailed [inserted: from Newport] in Capt Libbey at one oClock, and as the Wind was fair until this morning he must have gotten as far as the vineyard. I have about two days or at most three to close here - That is I have promised certain arrangements to [textloss] which will require that time, which to me is an age complete. But if the packet or other good Vessel will sail sooner. I shall embark. but I know not at this moment whether any Vessel is here. God bless you all - Lucy Henry & Caroline included
