Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Christiana Swan is happy to receive a letter from young Lucy Knox, whom she had not heard from in some time. Christiana philosophies about live and contemplation. She tells Lucy stories of balls and parties she attends. Christiana cannot seem to capture love, however: The favorite of to day is replaced by the favorite of to morrrow." Christiana letter contains entries from November 11-14, 1800.
