Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes, in response to Tuckerman's letter (see GLC02437.07818), that he has excellent land for sale and that he would be happy to settle it with the industrious Scotch men Tuckerman recommended. Provides the terms of purchase, including an offer of "extensive credit." Explains that settling and clearing new land is a difficult endeavor that requires fortitude, and hopes the settlers will be able to accomplish it.
