Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes that the bearer of the letter, Mr. Prescott, is a young lawyer who recently completed his study of law at Blake's firm. Prescott plans to travel eastward [perhaps to Maine] and Blake hopes Knox will help him settle in and introduce him to others in the area.

It is possible that the author of this document is the same individual as the author of GLC02437.08068. The handwritings are similar, but it is unclear if they are the same.
