Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signature clipped; handwriting and content suggest the author is Henry Knox. Writing to the merchant firm of [Wales] & Beale, Knox confirms that a shipment destined for his son, Henry Jackson Knox, and his son-in-law, E[benezer] Thatcher, has safely arrived. Discusses further orders of merchandise, as well as shipments of Knox's own product, casks of lime.
