Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Shaw notes that payment was made for purchases by Lucy Knox at the French milliner Mrs. Barre and at Luke Baker's store. Also noted that money was given to pay Mr. Sheppard's account. The total came to £3.1.4. Shaw mentions that Henry Jackson gave him the money.
