Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Three parts. First note from Jean-Baptiste de la Roche requesting Henry Knox to pay Mr. Duplaine $16.77 for him. Dated New York 10 May 1792. The second note verifies that the previous note was the actual handwriting and signature of de la Roche, signed and dated by Louis Osmont Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 17 May 1792. The last note on the verso is a note of receipt from Duplaine for the money, dated Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19 May 1792.
