Informs Knox that he will soon be travelling to the Waldo Patent, as a representative of the government of Massachusetts, in order to examine the claims of the settlers living there.

Salem Towne (1746-1825) had a son by the same name, Salem Towne, Jr. (1779-1864). Both became militia generals, justices of the peace, and became active in the local government. However, preliminary research suggests that the younger Towne was not politically active yet by 1803, which suggests that the author of the present document is the elder Towne.
