Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses a business matter involving Captain George [Ulmer] and [Mr. Buckner]. Pays Maynard, a lawyer, 150 dollars. Date from docket.

Possibly to Jonathan Maynard of Framingham, Massachusetts, who had served notably in the Revolutionary War. Following the war, Maynard became active in local and state politics, serving as justice of the peace, selectman, town clerk, state representative, state senator, and Framingham's first postmaster.
