Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly related to Dawes, the Boston architect and patriot. Account information pertains to 1771. Signed by Dawes on verso 26 February 1772, noting receipt of payment from Flucker. Flucker hired Dawes to complete various tasks, including chimney sweeping, whitewashing walls, and repairing stonework.
