At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 70,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World to soldiers’ letters from World War II and Vietnam. Captain Edward Burbeck's birth and death dates vary according to different sources. While most report that he was born in 1740 and died in 1783, some also report that he was born in 1738 and died in 1782.
