Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes in reply to a letter sent requesting assistance in obtaining a commission in the United States Army. States that "at present all vacancies are filled by the States..." and says it is unlikely more troops will be raised unless an Indian war breaks out. Adds that "the troops in service will of course in a year or two be modified agreably to the powers of the new government..." Watermarked "C Taylor."
