Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Lists amounts "[t]o a Warrant in [Knox's] favor .." by date. Also includes amounts due to the Indian Department, the War Office, and others. Total balance amounts to $15,517.46 ½ "due from Genl. Knox for which he is accountable and for which he must be charged on the books of the Treasury." Noted by Nourse: "I do certify that the Foregoing Acct. is a True Copy the original of which is Filed on Record in this office." Written in the Registers Office in the Treasury Department. Watermarked "Taylor" and "G R" under a crest.

Nourse was the first register of the Treasury.
