Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Copies an "extract of my daily Journal respecting the arrival of the trrops at Fort Washington and their movements - " for Knox. Goes on to list the arrival dates of the different companies and battalions. Dates range from 13 June to 20 October 1791. Sometimes mentions number of men arriving. Water damage in upper left corner. Noted as "No. 9." Watermarked. Letterpress copy.

Mentges was a member of the 5th Pennsylvania regiment and an inspector of the United States Army under the Secretary of War.
