Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses Bauman's wish to be an engineer. Does not think this is a good career for him since the work would only be for "three or at most four months employ ... Bauman was a major in the 2d Regiment of the New York Artillery and an original member of the New York State Society of the Cincinnati.
