At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

I send you a telegram that I received last night. As the weather seems to be breaking up in such a way as to render a speedy advance improbable, I would like authority to return to Richmond. Do not hesitate to decline this if you think the exigencies of the service demand it!
